Three stone engagement rings are a versatile and unusual alternative to traditional one step diamond engagement rings, known as solitaire rings. Becoming increasingly popular, three stone engagement rings give you the opportunity to choose more than one gem stone and create your own unique style and design that reflects your personal tastes and lifestyle.
Give her a unique three stone engagement ring
A three stone engagement ring is exactly what is says: an engagement ring consisting of three stones. (Incidentally, an anniversary ring is also often designed using three stones.) Usually, although not always, the betrothed couple will choose a central diamond and complement it with two other stones; diamonds if they have the money or less costly stones if they don’t. The stones could all be the same size or the two side stones could be smaller so as not to detract from the focus of the larger stone. Sometimes additional stones are chosen to accent the primary stone. Some jewelers also offer two stone rings and four stone rings. Multiple stone rings are popular if you are on a budget as small stones or chips are inexpensive but create a beautiful and youthful effect. It’s a matter of personal preference. If you decide on a custom ring, or you are giving a gift of a custom ring, it is best to speak to a professional jewelry designer and view samples and photographs of different designs.
Ring the changes
When designing a three stone engagement ring, you should make sure that the mounting and setting of the stones complement each other. For instance, if you choose only diamonds you have more options as to the mounting – diamonds look equally pretty in a yellow gold mounting as they do in a white gold or platinum mounting - but if you select sapphires, aquamarine or other colored precious or semi-precious gem stones, it would be preferable to choose white metals. Traditionally, engagement rings have at least one diamond.
Generally, three stone rings are designed using the prong setting, but you may prefer the bar, bezel or even pave settings. Once again, it is a matter of personal preference. Remember, if the ring is too chunky or large, it will detract from your wedding ring, unless you choose to wear your engagement ring on another finger. Get the best of all worlds with three stone engagement rings.
