Promise
rings are a tradition that go back to decades ago when young and in
love teens gave fraternity pin or class ring as a symbol of commitment
and a promise to be loyal to one another. Today’s promise rings are a sort
of pre-engagement commitment that says, “let’s see if we
are really ready for the next step.”
A Promise Ring for Her
Promise rings are a great way to say I love you and also an affordable
way to give a token of love that says to friends and families you
are committed to one another. Promise rings can be gold, silver or
even stainless steel. The can have small diamonds in them or any
other gemstone. Jewellers have many different designs from which
to choose.
Designers have also created bracelets that can be given. These may
indicate a somewhat lesser commitment than a ring might, but are
equally as cherished when given as a gift of love.
Promise rings are not like an engagement ring in that they are part
of a contractual commitment. For example, if an engagement ring is
given and the engagement is called off, then the ring must be returned.
Promise rings are more of a gift, that if things do not work out
they do not have to be returned.
A diamond
promise ring is sort of a mini-engagement ring in many ways. The cost is
considerably lower. The size of the diamond or other gem stone
is also usually smaller. Above all, the level of commitment symbolized
by the promise ring is to a much lesser degree than an engagement.
This is not to say that the love felt between the two people is
not as real. There is what is recognized by the giving of the jewellery
a promise of more in the future.
Finally, promise rings are still primarily given by boys to girls
not quite old enough to become officially engaged, or between men
and women that have good reason to not make the commitment of marriage
just yet. It is a promise of things to come, no matter the age or
circumstances of those giving or receiving promise rings.
