A promise ring is forever.
It represents the old adage: true love waits - a beautiful and timeless
reminder of the meaning of forever and togetherness. A promise ring
encapsulate this phrase, reminding the wearer of their pledge to wait
and remain true until they are wedded with their betrothed. In the
old days, it was believed that on the reflective surface of a betrothal
ring you could see pictures of your future with your betrothed.
Promise rings are bands of love
An engagement
promise is a pledge and an oath ’till death
do us part’ and in days gone by, a betrothal, which was
considered different to an engagement, was legally binding.
It was a time when a man made his intentions clear, often by
proffering promise rings, and stipulated the exact meaning,
including financial implications, of his promise with regard
to what he was going to put into the marriage and what he expected
from it. The actual engagement, after the families of the betrothed
had agreed on the terms of the forthcoming nuptials, was almost
a technicality and marked the celebration of the aforesaid
agreement between the man and the woman and their families.
It is from these times that the idea of promise rings originates.
But, while the lyrics of love still play in the endless promises
made between men and women today, the promise to marry is no
longer legally binding. Cynics might even comment that marriage,
these days doesn’t
appear to be legally binding either! Ironically in the light
of the increasing divorce rate, the sale of engagement gifts
in the past few years has increased dramatically and the range
of options for betrothal, engagement and promise rings is enormous.
You can buy a read-to-wear ring, have one custom-made or choose
to buy an antique or vintage heirloom ring. You can even buy
engagement presents and rings from discount jewelers, auctions
and through classified advertisements on the internet.
Bands of love
Promise rings can be purchased from any fine jeweler but to make
the moment even more special, more and more couples are electing
to have their promises symbolized by custom rings and sometimes
even by uniquely-designed and -styled once-off necklaces and bracelets.
