Engagement photography is a common practice in some cultures, but becoming more popular as couples are marrying people their friends and families may not have met. Often couple with purchase engagement photography to send out with their wedding invitations or to place an announcement in their local newspaper. It is a nice way for everyone to see a portrait of the new couple during their engagement.
Selecting a Photographer for Your Portrait
There are probably two items from your engagement and wedding day that will be remembered by family and friends the most – and may just warrant putting extra funds from your wedding budget in these areas. The first is the food. Your guests are most likely to comment on and remember if really good food is served. The second, and most important to the couple, are the wedding pictures and engagement photographies. These will provide cherished memories for generations to come.
When you choose a photographer you will want to find someone with whom you feel comfortable. This will most likely mean someone who treats you and the wedding party in a friendly manner and not just as business. You can get a sense of this when you employ him or her for your engagement photographies and decide then if you want to use them for your wedding pictures as well.
You will also want a photographer who offers various settings both indoors and out to create beautiful back drops either manufactured or natural. The pictures will need to be of the highest quality, so you will want to see their portfolio of other engagements and weddings and ask for references – then call those references. You may also want to ask if they work with both colour and black and white photography.
Many of the best wedding photographers will need to be reserved up to a year in advance, so this is a process that should be started early. Count back from your wedding date one year if you are planning a long enough engagement and book the photographer. Then you can schedule in your engagement photography.
